Farallon Island
A Research Facility
28 miles off the coast of San Francisco, California lies a Marine Sanctuary and SE Farallon Island. In order to support the year-round staffed scientific research station, the US Fish and Wildlife Service utilizes a hybrid-power system with renewable energy. Prior to installing the system in 1998, the Island typically consumed 5600 gallons of diesel fuel per year. In the first year of renewable energy incorporation diesel consumption was reduced to a total of 392 gallons.
